5G: The Next Generation of Mobile
5G is set to be rolled out across the UK soon, bringing with it a wide range of dramatic improvements. Unlike the transition from 3G to 4G, in which the latter actually replacedthe former, the fifth generation of mobile networks is designed to add another layer to existing 4G technology: here we look at some of the key benefits of 5G...
Unlike previous generations, 5G will not be defined by a single form of technology. It is often referred to as 'the network of networks', bringing together multiple existing and future standards. This means that, far from just delivering a performance increase, 5G will create a whole new set of technologies from landline-free broadband, smart factories and cars, holographics and infrastructure communication.
5G will utilise higher radio frequencies than currently in use: such frequencies are less cluttered and are capable of carrying more information at faster speeds. Multiple Input and Multiple Output (MIMO) antennae will boost signal and capacity, relying on a number of small transmitters stationed on street furniture and buildings as opposed to singular, standalone masts.
The biggest benefit of 5G will be vastly increased speed: it is expected to comfortably reach speeds of 1GB/s in the early stages. Eventually, 5G is expected to reach speeds of up to 10GB/s, which is 100 times faster than standard 4G. Capacity will also be dramatically increased, allowing networks to cope easily with many high-demand applications at the same time.
